뮤지컬  '캣츠'는 T.S. 엘리엇의 원작 우화집의 스토리를 기반으로 다양한 캐릭터의 고양이를 우리네 인생에 비유해 등장시켜 화려한 춤과 음악, 환상적인 무대 메커니즘으로 전세계 뮤지컬 팬들을 매료시키고 있다.

 

1년에 한 번 있는 고양이들의 축제인 ‘젤리클 볼’에 모인 각양각색의 고양이들은 자신이 겪은 독특한 인생경험을 개성넘치는 노래와 안무를 통해 풀어낸다. 

 

 

특히 공연의 마지막에 그리자벨라가 승천하는 장면에서 폐 타이어가 하늘로 올라가는 씬은 이 무대의 압권으로 꼽혔다. 객석 사이를 누비며 관객들과 호흡을 하는 고양이, 극장 천장과 벽면에 설치된 수많은 조명효과 역시 무대와 객석이 혼연일체가 되게 하는 환상적인 분위기가 오랜 기간 팬들의 뇌리에 인상깊게 남았었다.

 

  

 

이 뮤지컬의 타이틀 곡이라 할 수 있는 그리자벨라의 ‘메모리’는 엘러인 페이지와 바브라 스트라이샌드를 비롯한 1,590여 명의 가수들에 의해 180여 차례나 녹음되었다. 이제는 일반인들에게도 뮤지컬 곡이 아닌 팝 넘버처럼 인식될 정도로 공전의 대힛트를 친 불후의 명곡 반열에 올라섰다.   

 

아래 동영상은 엘라인 페이지의 실황공연 화면인데 초창기 가사는 여러번 개사된 최근의 스탠다드 가사와는 다소 틀리는 듯하다..

 

 

아래 <Memory> 동영상은 Elaine Paige가 1998년 런던 Gala 무대에서 부른 화면이다. 1948년생이라는데 그 당시에도 여전한 미모와 폭발적인 가창력을 보여 <British Got The Talented> 프로의 깜짝 스타로 떠오른 노처녀 Susan Boyle이 평소 자신의 우상이라 언급했을 정도의 무대 카리스마를 풍긴다.

 

 

이번에는 Barbra Streisand가 1981년 영화 Yentl 의 촬영 준비를 하며 런던 올림픽 스튜디오에서 녹음한 Cats-Memory 버전이다. 1969년인가 영화 Funny Girl 로 아카데미 주연여우상을 획득한 이후 잘 나가던 때 영상인데, 그 당시 매부리 코이긴 하지만 소피아 로렌처럼 한 시대를 풍미한 Powerful 한 엔터테이너의 풍모가 여전해 보인다.

Has the moon lost her memory?   달님은 그녀의 추억을 잊었는가요?

She is smiling alone.  그녀는 홀로 미소 짓고 있네요.

 

In the lamplight,   가로등 아래

the withered leaves collect at my feet,  내 발치에는 마른 잎새 모여들고

and the wind begins to moan.   바람은 흐느껴 울기 시작하네요.

 

 

Memory, All alone in the moonlight,   추억이여 달빛 아래서 나만 홀로

I can smile at the old days.    지난 날을 생각하며 웃음 짓네요.

I was beautiful then.   그 때 난 아름다왔지요

I remember the time   행복이 무엇인지 알았던

I knew what happiness was.  그 때가 기억나네요.

Let the memory live again.   그 추억 속에 다시 살고 싶어요.

 

Every street lamp seems   모든 거리에 가로등은

to beat a fatalistic warning.  파멸적 경고를 하듯 빛을 비추네요.

Someone mutters,   어떤 이는 투덜거리고

and the street lamp gutters   가로등이 희미해져 꺼지면

and soon it will be morning.  곧 아침이 다가오겠지요.

 

Daylight,   아침 어스름에

I must wait for the sunrise,   나는 해돋이를 기다려야 하고

I must think of a new life     새로운 삶을 생각해야 하지요.

and I musn't give in.    포기는 없어요.

 

When the dawn comes,   새벽이 오면

tonight will be a memory too   이 밤은 다시 추억이 되고

and a new day will begin.    새로운 날이 시작되겠지요..

 

Burnt out ends of smoky days,   안개 자욱했던 날도

the stale cold smell of morning.  퀴퀴한 아침의 찬 기운도 태워버리고

The street lamp dies,   거리 가로등이 꺼지면

another night is over,   또 하루 밤이 끝나고

another day is dawning.  다른 새벽이 오겠지요.

 

Touch me,    날 붙잡아 주세요

it's so easy to leave me,     나를 떠나는 건 쉬운 일이겠죠

all alone with the memory   좋았던 내 날들의

of my days in the sun.  추억 만을 가지고.

 

If you touch me,  날 붙잡아주신다면

you'll understand what happiness is.  당신은 행복이 뭔지 알게 될거예요.

Look, a new day has begun . 보세요, 새로운 날이 시작되었네요.
